The prosecutor investigating Hunter Biden reportedly stalled the investigation to avoid alerting the American public about the case in the middle of campaign season.
Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss began the case against Biden in 2018, initially with a focus on his overseas business dealings and later shifting to tax-related crimes. According to reports by Politico, the legal team was ready to pursue search warrants and subpoenas by the summer of 2020. While some officials wanted to continue the investigation and make the matter publicly known, others warned against this, asking Weiss to keep the case under wraps.
Politico first reported on the matter, writing, “‘To his credit, he listened,’ said a person involved in the discussions. Weiss decided to wait, averting the possibility that the investigation would become a months-long campaign issue.”
A year later, President Biden has denied involvement with his son’s business and the case has yet to incriminate either member of the first family. Upon nomination by Delaware’s two Democrat senators, former President Donald Trump appointed Weiss, a Republican attorney, to his position in 2018. Trump nor Weiss have yet to comment on the report.
